20 Unique and Uncrowded Spring Break Ideas For Families

Spring Break is one of the best times to travel. It is usually during the shoulder season, before the very crowded summer traffic arrives and after the crummy winter weather. However, there are certain destinations that do get crowded with tourists for spring break such as Florida. I’ve come up with some unique and uncrowded destinations that are fantastic for families to visit. These 20 spring break ideas for families are broken up into interests such as skiing, the beach, city breaks and national parks. Spring Skiing

While I would say the majority of families are looking to escape the cold during spring break, there are a few of you that love to hit the slopes in the spring. I don’t blame you.

In the western US, some of the best skiing happens in March. If your spring break is in April, a ski trip gets a little more risky. Here are a couple of spring break ideas for skiing with the family.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Gondolas, ski trail and the view from Steamboat Springs ski resort
Steamboat

Why Visit Steamboat Springs In The Spring?

Visiting Steamboat Springs in March offers the best of both winter and spring, with excellent late-season skiing and the chance to enjoy milder weather for outdoor activities. The opportunity to relax in the town’s natural hot springs makes it a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Ski resorts throughout Colorado will be busy during March because the snow is unbeatable, but the location of Steamboat Springs makes it a little less traveled. This keeps the crowd level to a more manageable size.

Recommendations For Your Trip To Steamboat Springs

Transportation

There are 6 different airlines that fly into Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) with 16 nonstop flights from cities all around the US. From there it is only 30 minutes to get to Steamboat Springs.

There are a few ways to get from the airport to the city. If your hotel is near one of the bus stops for the free bus, you don’t need a vehicle while visiting Steamboat. Here’s a link to the Steamboat Springs bus schedule and routes.

There are a few companies that provide a shared airport shuttle service, Steamboat Express, Ski Town Transportation and Storm Mountain Express. Also, you can arrange a private shuttle. I would recommend using GetTransfer.com

Renting a car is also a possibility if you want the freedom of having a car. I have heard that they do run out of rental cars at times, so it is best to book in advance.

Big Sky Resort

Why Visit Big Sky In The Spring?

Visiting Big Sky, Montana, in March is ideal for enjoying some of the best late-season skiing with abundant snowfall and longer, sunnier days on the slopes. The resort is so big you will need a full week to see it all. March brings smaller crowds and the lively après-ski scene makes it a perfect destination for ski enthusiasts.

Bozeman, Montana is also nearby providing another area of Montana to explore and some additional great dining options.

Recommendations For Your Trip To Big Sky

Transportation

You will need to fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) to access Big Sky. It is a quickly growing airport with many flight options daily.

If you plan to stay in Big Sky and don’t intend on visiting Bozeman or hiking in the nearby national forests, you don’t need a car while you are there. You can arrange a private or shared shuttle before you arrive. There are many shuttle companies listed on Big Sky Resort’s website here.

In my opinion, the best way to get around is to rent a car. There is ample parking in and around Big Sky and Bozeman and many other attractions nearby that aren’t easy to access by the free city bus.

Recommended Hotels In Big Sky

Big Sky doesn’t have many hotels besides The Wilson Hotel right in Town Center. I would recommend The Wilson Hotel. It is a very nice hotel in a great location.

If that doesn’t appeal to you, either look for a vacation rental on Airbnb or VRBO or book a lodge room directly through Big Sky Resort

Why Visit Panama In The Spring?

Visiting Panama in March and April is perfect for enjoying the country’s dry season, with sunny skies and warm temperatures. If you are looking to escape the cold, Panama is a great option.

There are pristine beaches on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. In addition to the beach culture, you can also go hiking through lush rainforests, or experience the vibrant culture of Panama City.

Another bonus is that spring is the shoulder season, right before the rainy season begins. A perfect balance of fewer crowds and great weather.

Recommendations For Your Trip To Panama

You will need to fly into Panama City, Tocumen Airport (PTY). The airport has multiple non-stop flights from the US daily. Miami is only a 3 hour flight away!

The roads in Panama are actually pretty good and easy to navigate for the most part. The Interamericana highway that runs down the middle of the country is very well taken care of and nicely paved.

I would not recommend driving in Panama City. It is easy to get around by Uber or by using the metro. Taxis will try to rip you off, so just avoid them.

Grenada

Anse La Roche Bay, Grenada

Why Visit Grenada In The Spring?

Visiting the Caribbean during spring break is a great idea because of the beautiful weather there during this time of the year. There are some islands that are more popular than others, making them crowded.

Grenada is one of the Caribbean islands that has fewer visitors, is beautiful and has a lot of activities for tourists. Nicknamed the spice island, Grenada abounds with natural beauty and culture.

There is so much to see and do on the Island of Spice. Explore St. George, relax at one of the gorgeous beaches, explore the mountainous rainforests, hike to some waterfalls, visit spice farms, and sail the shores.

Recommendations For Your Trip To Grenada

Transportation

There are a few airlines that provide direct flights to Grenada (GND) including JetBlue and American Airlines. Caribbean Airlines also has a flight that stops in Trinidad.

Getting around Grenada is easy. There are public buses, water taxis, land taxis, tour companies that provide transportation, or you can rent a car. Although if you want to drive in Grenada you must get a driving permit from the Central Police Station in St. George which is an annoying extra step.

Hawaii

Northern beaches in Oahu - one of the 20 spring break ideas for families
Oahu, Hawaii

Why Visit Hawaii In The Spring?

Hawaii is a top destination to visit any time of year but spring is exceptional since the weather is pleasant and there are fewer crowds compared to the winter and summer peak travel periods.

The unique blend of breathtaking natural beauty, rich culture and endless adventures means everyone will be able to find something incredible to do. Enjoy Hawaii’s stunning beaches, lush rainforests, majestic volcanoes, and vibrant marine life.

Whether you’re surfing on iconic waves, hiking to breathtaking waterfalls, snorkeling with sea turtles, or immersing yourself in Hawaiian traditions like hula and lei-making, you and the rest of the family will create memories to last a lifetime.

Additionally, March is a great time to see humpback whales and the Merrie Monarch Festival is in April where Hawaiian artistry and culture is showcased.

Recommendations For Your Trip To Hawaii

Transportation

There are many different airports you can fly into when arriving in Hawaii depending on which islands you want to visit. According to Hopper, the cheapest airport to fly to is Kahului (OGG) on the island of Maui with Lihue (LIH) on the island of Kauai coming in as a close second. Honolulu (HNL) is also another option with similar prices.

Every island is different in terms of transportation options. You can take bus tours to get around or use a shuttle, taxi, Uber or public transportation. Rental cars are also available and should be reserved in advance.

In order to go from one island to another your best bet is to take a flight. One exception is if you are traveling between Maui and Lanai, then you can take a 45 minute ferry.

The other option is to book a cruise that will take you between islands.

Best Activities And Places To Visit In Hawaii

  • Hawaii (The Big Island) – Volcano National Park
  • Kauai – Napali coast, hiking and adventure activities
  • Oahu – If you want it all on one island. Attractions include Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, North Shore, Honolulu and much more – It can be more crowded than the others…
  • Maui – If you want it all on one island and no large city. Ocean activities galore and Haleakala National Park

Oregon Coast

Bandon Beach - Oregon Coast
Bandon Beach, Oregon

Why Visit The Oregon Coast In The Spring?

Okay I know what you are thinking. The Oregon Coast in the spring? Isn’t that going to be chilly? Well yes, it will not be swimsuit weather. However the Oregon Coast for spring break is a fantastic option if you want to see its stunning shoreline without any crowds.

Create a road trip itinerary along the Oregon Coast with multiple stops along the way. See gorgeous beaches, hike to stunning waterfalls, look for migrating gray whales and climb (and jump off of!) epic sand dunes.

Recommendations For Your Trip To The Oregon Coast

Transportation

Fly into Portland (PDX) to start your Oregon Coast adventure. When we went to the Oregon Coast, we drove from Montana, which meant we drove along the Columbia River just north of Mt. Hood. If you want to add some hiking to beautiful waterfalls such as Bridal Veil Falls or Multnomah Falls, I would highly recommend exploring this lush area.

Once you arrive in Portland, rent a car. You will need it to get to all of the destinations along the coast.

Some of us love an adventure. I know I sure do. The US has some of the best national parks in the world. Some are better to visit in the summer while others shine in the spring and fall. Here are some spring break ideas for US National Parks to visit.

White Sands National Park, New Mexico

White Sands National Park - sand dune - one of the 20 spring break ideas for families
White Sands National Park

Why Visit White Sands In The Spring?

White Sands National Park is a very unique park in the U.S. The sand is actually not normal sand but made of gypsum crystals making the large dune field appear to be white.

Visiting White Sands National Park is full of adventure. There are many trails and pullouts on Dunes Drive where you can hike among the white sand, go sledding down a dune, seek out creatures that live in this unique environment and take many, many photos!

Another bonus is that the weather isn’t as hot this time of year! Perfect for hiking in the dunes.

Recommendations For Your Trip To White Sands

Transportation

To arrive to White Sands National Park, you will need to fly into Las Cruces, New Mexico (LRU) or El Paso, TX (ELP). Las Cruces is about an hour drive and El Paso is about an hour and a half.

Rent a car from the airport upon arrival as you will need it to access the park and get around the area. Combine a trip to White Sands with a visit to Carlsbad Caverns

Moab, Utah (Canyonlands and Arches National Park)

Delicate Arch in Arches National Park
Delicate Arch in Arches National Park

Why Visit Moab In The Spring?

Visiting Moab in the spring is incredible and honestly there are quite a few people that visit during this time because the weather is just perfect for outdoor activities in the desert. I added it, however, because there is so much to do in this part of the U.S. that it is easy to escape the crowds, and it is so beautiful that the crowds are worth the trouble.

This area of Utah is rich with National Parks and beauty. Bring your hiking shoes and/or mountain biking shoes and discover one of my favorite areas in the western USA.

Recommendations For Your Trip To Moab

Transportation

I have actually never flown into Moab but it is possible. Canyonlands Field (CNY) is nearby. If prices are too high, Grand Junction (GJT) and Salt Lake City (SLC) are the other closest larger airports.

Rent a car or better yet a 4WD vehicle for your trip. There are some really cool drives in this area. If you can’t rent a 4WD there are also 4WD and ATV Off Road Tours you can take!

Best Activities And Places To Visit In Moab

  • Arches National Park
  • Canyonlands National Park
  • Dead Horse Point
  • Hiking to the many arches and rock formations in the area
  • Mountain biking

Death Valley National Park, California

Why Visit Death Valley In The Spring?

As Death Valley National Park is one of the driest and hottest places in the US, it is an ideal location to visit during spring break when you are looking for somewhere warm to be. Now you might not be lying on the beach with a mojito in your hand, but you will shake away the winter chill easily.

Death Valley is a beautiful location to visit, not just warm. The landscape is out of this world, the sunrises and sunsets will knock your socks off, and it is also one of the best places to stargaze. Dust off those hiking boots, you are going to need them here!

Recommendations For Your Trip To Death Valley

Transportation

Due to its isolation, it will take a little driving to get to Death Valley National Park. Fly into Las Vegas (LAS) as it is the nearest major airport. Rent a car and make your way to the park. It will take around 2 hours to arrive.

Best Activities And Places To Visit In Death Valley

  • Salt Flats at Badwater Basin (Go at sunrise or sunset!)
  • Artists Palette
  • Devils Golf Course
  • Golden Canyon
  • Zabriskie Point
  • Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes

Zion National Park, Utah

Look at these pictures. We were such babies. 🥹

Why Visit Zion In The Spring?

Zion is another Utah National Park that is fantastic to visit in the spring. The temperatures are lower than in the summer and the crowds are also less. The spring brings more vibrant colors in the landscape, making the scenery even more breathtaking.

When I think about Zion, I think of one word: dramatic. The red cliff faces, the spectacular hikes, the narrow slot canyons – they are all on another level. There’s a reason Zion has become one of the most popular U.S. National Parks.

Recommendations For Your Trip To Zion

Transportation

The closest airport to Zion is St. George (SGU), but it is a smaller airport, so the prices will be higher. The cheapest option will be to fly into Las Vegas (LAS) and rent a car from there. It will take around 2 and a half hours to make the drive.

Another couple of gorgeous areas nearby that are worth a visit are Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Bryce Canyon National Park

San Luis Obispo or SLO is a charming coastal town that embodies the laid-back California lifestyle with a touch of small-town charm. My favorite part of San Luis Obispo is its location which is nestled in between rolling hills that are perfect for hiking and the Pacific Ocean that is lined with gorgeous beaches.

Spring is a glorious time to visit the city of Gaudi. We were there at the end of March and the weather was really nice, not too hot and not too cold. Also the crowds were nonexistent. Why Visit Paris In The Spring?

The city of love is always a wonderful choice. Paris is also great with kids too! We loved our time visiting Paris in April. We found that it was before the busy season and people were extremely friendly during this time, which is not always the case!
