Travel Guide To Montana

Montana is a beautiful state in the northwest of the United States. We fell in love with it at first sight. We loved it so much that we moved to Bozeman 2 months after our first visit.

As a very large state, the landscape can vary depending on where you go. You will find miles and miles of plains, vast mountain ranges and grand valleys. It is known as big sky country because you can see for miles in all directions. It feels as big as it is.

Personally, I find the westside of the state to be the only area that is worth visiting in Montana with its mountains, valleys and lakes. It is very beautiful.

We lived in Bozeman for over 6 years and have explored many other areas of Montana. Our favorite areas, besides Bozeman, have been Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky, Missoula, Helena, Whitefish and Glacier National Park. There are other smaller towns too that are interesting as well. You will find a map of them below.

When To Visit Montana

Montana has something to offer year-round and there’s really only one time of year that I wouldn’t recommend.

Peak Season

Peak season in Montana is two times a year, the summer and over the winter holidays.

The summer is the busiest and most expensive time to visit. The weather is phenomenal, and its the best time to be outside exploring the trails. You will find the biggest crowds at the two national parks, Yellowstone and Glacier. The greatest thing about Montana, though, is that it is so grand that you can easily find an empty trail or hidden lake.

The other busy time in Montana is over Christmas and New Years. This holiday break is filled with skiers and those who love the snow. The national parks aren’t as busy during this time, but holidays always bring more visitors anywhere.

I would also say that spring break can be busy at Big Sky Ski Resort.

Off Season

The worst time to visit Montana is in the spring. There are moments of great weather in the spring and there are other times that are cold and rainy or snowy. What makes it undesirable is the unpredictability of the weather. It can be sunny and warm one day. Snowy and cold the next. Sometimes you can have sun, warmth, cold and rain all on one day.

Another negative to spring in Montana is that the trails are a mess. Locals call it muddy season. The snow is melting making the trails, well muddy. It isn’t pleasant for hiking.

There are a couple of positives to visiting in the spring. One is that it is the cheapest time of year to come and there are almost no other tourists around. I had to go back to Bozeman in April 2025 to do some work on our house and I have never seen the airport so empty. It was like a ghost town.

Another way to make the most of your spring trip is to see some waterfalls. The snow melt creates powerful flowing waterfalls that are amazing to see this time of year.

Also, if you like to ski, Big Sky ski resort is open until April. Spring skiing can be really fun because it is warmer and the kids won’t complain about their toes being frozen.

Shoulder Season

For a mix of fantastic weather, less people, and slightly lower prices, choose the fall for your visit. September is your best bet for all three. October and November brings a higher chance for snow, which isn’t the end of the world if you don’t mind it. It just makes it harder to do some hiking at higher elevations.

In September and early October, the high elevation roads in the national parks, Going to the Sun in Glacier and Beartooth Highway by Yellowstone, are still open too. There is also a lower chance of smoke-filled skies due to wildfire this time of year, which can be a problem in late summer.

There really are so many cool spots to visit in Montana. While all of my Montana posts so far have been about the Bozeman and Yellowstone National Park area, I have been to other areas too. I haven’t written about them yet, but I can point you towards some great destinations.

Below I have marked on the map popular destinations to visit in Montana and some hidden gems that we have discovered over the years. I mentioned some of the hot spots above including Big Sky, Missoula, Helena, Whitefish, and Glacier National Park. Some other, lesser-known spots include: Ennis, Red Lodge, Virginia City, Philipsburg, Georgetown Lake, The Bitterroot Mountains, and Flathead Lake.

In addition to the beautiful locations to visit in Montana, I’ve also added the nearest airport to fly into. Hope you get to visit Montana and fall in love with it as quickly as I did.
