Best Time To Visit Quito, Ecuador
One of the best things about visiting Quito is that you can go any time of the year! Thanks to its location near the equator and high elevation in the Andes, the weather stays relatively mild and consistent year-round.
Expect comfortable spring-like temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s °F (15–21°C). It’s never too hot or too cold, perfect for exploring Quito’s historic streets or heading out on a volcano hike.
If you’re hoping for lots of sunshine, the best time to visit is between June and September, when skies tend to be clearest. That said, we visited in November and still had many sunny days!
Just keep in mind that the weather in Quito can be unpredictable, so pack layers and be ready for a passing thunderstorm now and then.

See The Sights Of Quito’s Historic Center
One of the most popular attractions in Quito, Ecuador is its beautifully preserved historic center. Visiting during the daytime is a must. It’s full of fascinating architecture, lively plazas, and rich cultural history.
Our local guide Jorge highly recommends taking a guided tour to get the most out of the experience.
Some of the most iconic sites, like La Basílica del Voto Nacional and La Virgen del Panecillo statue, are easier to reach by car. A knowledgeable guide can bring these places to life with stories and facts that kids and adults will both enjoy.
If you’re exploring Quito with kids, they’ll love climbing the towers of La Basílica for jaw-dropping city views. It’s one of the best photo ops in the city!
And, there’s a sweet reward too: the chocolate tasting stop is a crowd favorite for families.

Day Trip To The Quilotoa Crater
A day trip to Quilotoa Crater is one of the most unforgettable experiences you can have during your Ecuador family vacation.
While the drive from Quito is long (about 3 hours each way), the ever-changing landscapes and breathtaking Andean views make the journey just as memorable as the destination.
Our tour drove a double decker bus that was open on top and invited us to sit and take it all in while driving through the mountains. Spectacular!
Some tour companies offer a combined trip to Quilotoa and Cotopaxi in one day. But we recommend doing them separately. That way, you’ll have more time to soak it all in, especially if you’re traveling with kids or prefer a slower pace.
Once you arrive, prepare to be wowed. The views from the rim of the turquoise crater lake are absolutely stunning.
The hike down to the lake takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace, and it’s downhill the whole way.
On the way back up, you can hike or, if your legs (or kids!) need a break, hire a horse to carry you back to the top.
The small town of Quilotoa is a traditional indigenous village with plenty of charm. It’s easy to wander and explore. It has small shops selling local crafts and souvenirs, plus casual restaurants offering warm, affordable meals.
Pro Tip: Dress in layers! It can be chilly at the top but warms up as you hike down. And bring water, sunscreen, and some cash, especially if you’re considering the horse ride back up.

Mitad Del Mundo (Middle Of The World)
One of the most famous things to do on a Quito vacation is visiting the equator or both of them! Let me explain.
If you’re short on time, Jorge recommends heading to Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, the monument located on the original equator line identified centuries ago.
While it’s not the exact equator, it’s a fun stop and well set up for tourists. Our kids especially loved the playground!
If you have a little more time, head to Museo Intiñan, where GPS technology confirmed the real equator.
This interactive museum is full of fun experiments. Watch water spin in opposite directions on either side of the line, try balancing an egg on a nail, or attempt to walk the equator blindfolded.
If you’re up for even more adventure, consider adding Pululahua Crater to your Ecuador family vacation itinerary. This dormant volcanic crater is unique because people actually live and farm inside it. That’s something you won’t see every day!

TelefériQo (Cable Car In Quito)
One of the best views in all of Quito comes from riding the TelefériQo cable car in Quito, a must-do activity on any Ecuador family trip.
It climbs up to an altitude of about 12,000 feet, giving you sweeping views of the entire city and surrounding Andes Mountains.
We recommend going early in the morning for the best chance of clear skies and uninterrupted views. Weather can change quickly at high altitude!
Cost: $9 for adults and $7 for kids under 18.
Once you reach the top, you can walk about 15 minutes to a photo-worthy swing. It’s a simple thrill with an unforgettable backdrop.
If you take the “Quito – All Main Attractions” tour with Jorge, the cable car is included.
If you go solo, you can also continue down the trail that leads to the peak of the Pichincha Volcano.
Feeling adventurous? If you’re visiting without small kids, continue along the trail to hike up to the summit of Pichincha Volcano.
The trail includes some steep and challenging sections, so it’s better suited for older kids, teens and adults.

Climb The Basilica Del Voto Nacional
La Basílica is one of the most iconic landmarks in Quito, Ecuador, and easily one of the most unique Gothic-style churches in South America.
The exterior is incredibly photogenic, especially the gargoyles. But these aren’t your typical European ones!
They’re inspired by Ecuador’s diverse wildlife, with marine iguanas from the Galápagos, Amazonian jaguars, and Andean condors carved into the stone.
It’s like a wildlife tour built into the architecture.
Entrance Fees:
- $2 to visit the main sanctuary
- An additional $2 to climb the towers and explore the upper walkways
For those up for the challenge, climbing the spires rewards you with one of the best panoramic views in the city. It’s a fantastic photo opportunity, and a little adrenaline rush!
Heads-up: The upper staircases to the spires are steep and quite exposed. If you or your kids have a fear of heights, you might want to enjoy the view from the base or lower levels instead. That said, many kids who love a bit of adventure will think it’s awesome!
This is a standout stop on any Quito vacation and will make for a memorable part of your Ecuador family trip.

Calle De La Ronda
Calle de la Ronda is one of the oldest streets in Quito, Ecuador, known for its colonial charm and cobbled lanes lined with colorful balconies.
Once a lively hub of music, food, and artisans, it was a must-see for anyone visiting the historic center.
While the street hasn’t fully bounced back to its pre-COVID energy, some restaurants and shops have sadly closed, it’s still worth a visit.
If you’re already in the historic downtown, take a stroll, peek into the small galleries or cafes that remain, and imagine what this street looked like in its heyday.
Travel tip: Try to visit during the weekend when more places tend to open up.

Day Trip To Cotopaxi National Park
Just a couple of hours from the city, Cotopaxi is one of the best day trips from Quito, and easily one of the top natural attractions in all of Ecuador.
Towering at nearly 20,000 feet, this snowcapped volcano is absolutely worth the trip.
Jorge, our trusted local guide, recommends exploring Cotopaxi National Park on horseback. It’s a peaceful and scenic way to experience the high-altitude páramo landscape without overexerting yourself.
Think wide-open plains and epic views of the volcano.
If you’re more into hiking, you can trek up to the Jose F. Rivas Refuge, located at 15,953 feet (4,864 meters).
It’s a short but steep hike, and once you arrive, you can warm up with a hot chocolate and even get your passport stamped!
What Jorge doesn’t recommend? The mountain biking tours down Cotopaxi’s gravel roads.
While they might sound fun, the rides are rough, the road is dusty, and it’s not as enjoyable as it may appear in photos.

Parque La Carolina
If you’re looking for a green escape in the heart of Quito, head to Parque La Carolina.
This huge city park is one of the best spots to relax, stretch your legs, or let the kids run free.
It’s located in one of the safest and most modern neighborhoods in the city, making it a great area to stay during your Ecuador family vacation.
You’ll also find plenty of restaurants, shops, and hotels nearby, including our favorite restaurant, Somos!
On weekends, the park comes to life with Quiteños enjoying the outdoors. Think food vendors, music, bouncy castles, and families picnicking under the trees. It’s a great way to experience local culture and unwind at the same time.
Fun for kids: Challenge them to find the graffitied airplane in the middle of the park. Yes, there’s a real airplane sitting right in the middle of the green space!
Snack tip: Look for Ceviches de Chochos – one of the little street food spots in the park.
Parque Itchimbia
Parque Itchimbía is a peaceful green space perched above Quito, offering some of the best views of the city and the surrounding volcanoes. Its close proximity to the historic downtown makes it the perfect place to escape the buzz of the city without going far.
This park is ideal for families looking to unwind during their Ecuador family trip. With winding trails through eucalyptus trees and wide open spaces to play or relax, it’s a great place to stretch your legs after a day of sightseeing.
If you’re into birdwatching, bring your binoculars. Parque Itchimbía is home to a surprising number of bird species, making it a favorite among nature lovers visiting Quito.
And if you’re visiting around sunset, it’s also a perfect area to grab dinner with a view. Vista Hermosa has a location nearby with rooftop seating and sweeping views, while Café Mosaico offers cozy vibes, great food, and a stunning outlook over Quito.
Museo Templo Del Sol Pintro Ortega Maila
If you’re curious about Andean art, history, and culture, a visit to the Museo Templo del Sol might pique your interest.
Designed and built by renowned Ecuadorian artist Ortega Maila, the museum is more than just an art gallery, it’s a spiritual and cultural experience set against a dramatic mountain backdrop.
The highlight of the visit is the ceremonial solar clock, carefully aligned to catch the very first rays of sun during the summer and winter solstices.
If your Ecuador vacation happens to overlap with one of these seasonal moments, it’s a particularly meaningful time to explore the museum.
That said, if you’re not especially into indigenous art or history, this may not be a must-see for your itinerary.
It’s a unique spot, but it’s not for everyone. However, if you’re visiting during the solstice, it transforms into one of the more unique things to do near Quito.
La Virgin Del Panecillo
The towering statue of La Virgen del Panecillo overlooking Quito is worth a visit. The panoramic views of the city from the top are stunning.
You might see some bloggers recommend walking up the hill, but our local guide Jorge strongly advises against it. The neighborhood at the base of El Panecillo is known to be dangerous.
Instead, take a taxi or visit as part of a guided tour for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Where To Stay In Quito
La Floresta is a good neighborhood to stay in due to its easy access to restaurants at any hour.
Another good area to stay in is near Carolina Park. Some of the most modern buildings have Airbnbs that have great facilities for families with kids too. We stayed in this area!
Note: It is NOT recommended to stay inside the historic downtown since all restaurants close after 7 pm and it’s not safe to walk around at night.
