This 48-hour itinerary is perfect for families with older kids, blending cultural sights, scenic waterfront views, and fun activities that both adults and kids can enjoy. Whether you’re strolling along the canals, crossing one of Hamburg’s many bridges, or diving into its rich maritime history, this guide will show you exactly how to spend a weekend in Hamburg. Best Time To Visit Hamburg, Germany
Hamburg is a great family-friendly destination year-round, but some seasons make exploring the city even more enjoyable. Summer (June to August) is perfect for boat tours and playground-hopping, with long days and warm weather. However, it’s also the busiest time, meaning higher prices and bigger crowds, especially during a weekend in Hamburg.
For a more relaxed visit, spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October) offer mild temperatures, fewer tourists, and plenty of outdoor fun.
If your family enjoys festive activities, winter (November to December) brings magical Christmas markets, ice skating, and cozy cafés serving hot chocolate.
We visited in February and, although it was a little chilly, it wasn’t too cold to be outside exploring. With warm coats, hats, and gloves, we had no problem enjoying the city’s scenic waterfront, historic sites, and family-friendly attractions. Plus, the lower crowds made it even better!
For a special experience, time your visit around the Hamburg Port Anniversary in May, where you can enjoy boat parades and even a tugboat ballet (I love weird and unique things like this!🤪), or the DOM Fun Fair, which takes place three times a year with rides, games, and treats the whole family will love.

How To Get Around Hamburg
Since most of the activities in this weekend in Hamburg itinerary are within a compact area, walking is the best way to explore. The city is packed with bridges, canals, and scenic streets, making it a great place to wander.
When we visited, we drove to Hamburg and quickly realized that having a car was unnecessary and expensive. We ended up parking in a garage for €40 per night and barely used our car.
Instead, we walked almost everywhere and only took public transportation once when something was too far. If you can, avoid bringing a car and save yourself the hassle (and parking fees!).
Hamburg’s public transport system is efficient and easy to use. The U-Bahn (metro) and S-Bahn (light rail) connect major areas, and tickets work across buses and ferries too.
If you plan on using public transport more than once, a Hamburg Card can save you money on unlimited rides and discounts at attractions.

Best Places To Stay In Hamburg With Kids
Finding the right place to stay is key to making the most of your weekend in Hamburg. The best areas for families are centrally located, so you can easily explore on foot and minimize transportation time.
Here are three great neighborhoods to consider:
Hamburg – Neustadt
Neustadt is a fantastic choice for families who want to be in the heart of the city. It’s easy to walk to major attractions, but if you’re driving, keep in mind that parking is expensive!
The area is also known for its high-end shopping, so if you love browsing designer stores, this is the place to be.
Where we stayed: Renaissance Hamburg Hotel – A great option in Neustadt with a central location and family-friendly amenities.
Alstadt – Old Town
Another centrally located option, Altstadt (Old Town) is perfect if you want to be surrounded by history.
This area is home to beautiful architecture, historic landmarks, and some of the city’s best museums. Staying here puts you within walking distance of top attractions like the Rathaus (City Hall) and the stunning churches of Hamburg.

HafenCity
If you prefer a modern vibe, HafenCity is a newer district with sleek architecture and a waterfront setting.
It’s right next to Speicherstadt, the city’s historic warehouse district, making it a great blend of old and new.
Families will love Grasbrookpark, which has a fantastic playground for kids to burn off some energy.

Day 1 – Explore Hamburg By Foot
On the first day of this 48 hours in Hamburg adventure, get ready to dive right into the heart of the city with a day of exploration by foot. This Hamburg itinerary is packed with some of the city’s most iconic sights, all within walking distance from your hotel.
Getting To Hamburg
Before we jump into all the amazing sites to see in Hamburg, let’s talk about how to get to the city. Since we live just 3 hours away from Hamburg, driving is the easiest option for us, though there are plenty of other ways to reach this vibrant city.
By Car
Driving to Hamburg is a straightforward option if you’re coming from nearby cities like Copenhagen, Berlin, or even the Netherlands. However, keep in mind that parking in the downtown area is quite expensive. Expect to pay around 30-40 euros per night for hotel parking! If you’re planning to drive, be prepared for those additional costs.
By Plane
If you’re flying into Hamburg, the city’s international airport (Hamburg Airport (HAM)) is well-connected with flights from all over Europe and beyond.
From the airport, you can easily catch a taxi or take the S-Bahn (light rail) to the city center in just 25 minutes.
By Train
Although we didn’t take the train, Hamburg is accessible by high-speed trains from major cities across Europe including trains from Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Berlin.
If you’re traveling from within Germany or neighboring countries, the train is a comfortable option. Expect a scenic, smooth ride but plan for a transfer if you’re coming from farther away.

Breakfast At Elbgold
For breakfast, we highly recommend Elbgold, a popular coffee shop with several locations around Hamburg. We visited the one in Innenstadt, and it was the perfect start to our day.
They serve a great selection of pastries and coffee to fuel you for your morning adventures. We highly recommend the marzipan croissant. It’s absolutely delicious! The combination of marzipan and buttery pastry is a treat.
If you’re after something more local, don’t miss trying franzbrötchen, a sweet, cinnamon-filled pastry that’s a Hamburg classic. Although, spoiler alert, breakfast tomorrow has some of the best franzbrötchen we tried in the city!
Keep in mind, there isn’t a lot of seating inside Elbgold, just a few window seats, so it’s best for grabbing something to go or a quick stop.
Admire Hamburg City Hall – Rathaus
Next, make sure to visit Rathaus, the stunning city hall in the heart of Hamburg. This grand building is a must-see during your 48 hours in Hamburg and is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.
Don’t just admire the front. Be sure to explore both the front and the backside of the building for two completely different perspectives. The architecture is impressive from all angles!
If you are interested, you can also take a guided tour. You don’t need to reserve your spot in advance. The tours start at 11.15 am, 1.15 pm and 3.15 pm on published tour days. You can find the tour dates and prices on their website here.
While you’re in the Alstadt area, take time to wander the charming streets, filled with bridges and scenic views. You can also check out the shopping options in the area, where you’ll find a mix of high-end stores and local boutiques.
After you’ve taken in the sights, enjoy a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood to fully experience the charm of Hamburg’s old town. It’s the perfect blend of history, culture, and a bit of retail therapy!
Stroll Around Stadthöfe
Next up, take some time to explore Stadthöfe, a charming area filled with cute courtyards, picturesque bridges, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot to wander around and soak in the sights. We had a great time here, and it was the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll.
If you’re visiting later in the day, there are a few spots where you can unwind with a delicious cocktail while enjoying the ambiance. We had a couple tasty ones at Bar Noir.
One of the highlights of the day was when our youngest son, who’s obsessed with supercars, insisted we stop at the Ferrari store in the area. It was a fun, unexpected detour, and he was in heaven checking out the Ferrari on display.

Lunch At Shiso Burger
For lunch, head to Shiso Burger, where you can experience a unique twist on the classic burger. This spot combines the flavors of Asia and traditional burger for a one-of-a-kind dining experience.
You’ll find options like the Buldak Burger with crispy fried chicken and Kimchi, the Bulgogi Burger featuring thinly marinated beef slices, or the vegetarian Toad Burger made from portobello mushrooms.
Don’t worry, not all of the burgers are unique. The kids and non-adventurous eaters can still enjoy a traditional cheeseburger.
After lunch, take a stroll down Deichstraße, a picturesque street lined with historic houses. It’s a lovely spot to soak in some more local charm and while heading to your next stop.
Admire The Elbphilharmonie And Take In The View
Next on the agenda is the Elbphilharmonie, one of Hamburg’s most iconic landmarks. This stunning concert hall is located on the Elbe River and offers a unique architectural experience.
You can visit the Plaza for free, which offers pretty views of the city and the harbor. It’s a great spot to snap some photos and take in Hamburg from a new perspective.
The Elbphilharmonie is a must-see during your 48 hours in Hamburg, whether you’re an architecture lover, a music enthusiast, or just want to enjoy the panoramic views of the city.
Wander Around Speicherstadt – A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Next up is Speicherstadt, one of my absolute favorite areas in the city. This historic district, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the world’s largest warehouse complex.
It’s a stunning place to wander, with its red-brick buildings and picturesque canals. Make sure to wander the bridges around the area. They’re perfect for taking in the unique views.
Don’t miss the popular viewpoint Aussichtspunkt Wasserschloss, where you can take the most famous photo of Hamburg. My photo above is actually from our morning boat tour and doesn’t have the best lighting.
We sadly didn’t have an opportunity to go back in the evening during this trip, but next time we visit, this is when I’ll be going.
Exploring Speicherstadt is one of the highlights of any weekend in Hamburg! Loved it!

St. Nikolai Memorial For A History Lesson
Next, head over to the St. Nikolai Memorial, a striking piece of Hamburg’s history. When it was constructed in 1874, this church was the tallest building in the world for a couple of years. Unfortunately it was heavily damaged during World War II.
The remaining ruins now stand as a memorial, where you can visit and even take a lift up the steeple for amazing views of the city.
We were a bit short on time during our weekend in Hamburg, so we didn’t get a chance to go up the memorial or visit the museum, but it’s definitely worth considering if you have the time!
It’s a great spot for those interested in history or those wanting to get an aerial view of the city.
Dinner At Pizzeria Arione
For dinner, head to Pizzeria Arione on Deichstraße for some delicious Italian food. Whether you’re in the mood for pizza or pasta (always a hit with kids!), you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings.
The staff are super friendly, making it a perfect spot to relax after a busy day of exploring Hamburg. Be sure to make a reservation for this popular restaurant!

Day 2 – Explore Hamburg By Water
On day two of the 48 hours in Hamburg itinerary, we’ll be exploring the city by the water. With its stunning canals, bridges, and waterfront areas, Hamburg offers a completely different vibe when seen from the water.
Whether you’re wandering along the docks or cruising the canals, today is all about soaking in the sights along Hamburg’s scenic waterfront.
Try A Franzbrötchen At Fam Kiosk And Cafe
Start your day at Fam Kiosk and Café, where we had the best franzbrötchen during our trip to Hamburg.
A franzbrötchen is a traditional pastry from Hamburg, often compared to a cinnamon roll but with a distinct twist. It’s made from buttery, flaky dough that’s rolled up with a generous amount of cinnamon and sugar, then baked to golden perfection. The result is a deliciously sweet, slightly crunchy pastry.
This cozy spot also offers a variety of other delicious pastries, bagels, and toast options, if you aren’t interested in the franzbrötchen. Whether you’re craving something sweet or savory, you’ll find a tasty treat to kickstart your morning.

Experience The Hamburg Fish Market – Sundays Only
Next up, head to the famous Hamburg Fish Market, a must-see experience if you’re in town on a Sunday. Open from 5am to 9:30am in the summer and 7am to 9:30am in the winter, this bustling market is where locals and visitors alike come for fresh seafood, local produce, and lively entertainment.
It’s not just about the fish. Expect to find vendors selling everything from flowers to local cheeses, and there’s often music to set the lively atmosphere. It’s a great place to soak in the local culture, grab a quick bite, and enjoy the vibrant energy of Hamburg on a Sunday morning!
See Hamburg Attractions On A Boat Tour
There are a few different boat tours you can take in Hamburg, depending on what you want to see. We chose the 1.5-hour tour with Rainer Abicht Elbreederei because it took us through the historic Speicherstadt and into the port area, where we saw enormous container ships and even a cruise ship docked there.
We wanted to see both areas of the city and an hour and a half was the perfect amount of time on the water.
Unfortunately for us, the tour was conducted only in German. You can, however, download an audio guide in six other languages, including English, to learn more about the history and interesting sights along the way if you want!
Other popular boat tour options in Hamburg include:
- Enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise on Alster Lake. This is a relaxing way to be on the water and see Hamburg from a different perspective. Don’t expect a history lesson on this one.
- 1 hour Harbor Tour, a shorter ride through the port that lets you get up close to the massive ships. Similar to the one we experienced but only an hour long.
- If you’re in the mood for a romantic experience, the 90-Minute Evening Lights Harbor Cruise provides stunning views of the city at sunset. Tour guide only speaks in German and bring cash if you want to purchase a drink!
Seafood At Underdocks For Lunch
For lunch, we highly recommend Underdocks, a casual spot known for its delicious seafood.
One thing you’ll quickly learn is that fish rolls are a special treat in Hamburg, and this place does them right. We tried the crunchy backfisch and chips, a crunchy backfisch roll, and a lobster roll, all of which were absolutely delicious.
The lobster roll was definitely the standout. It was to die for and totally worth the price! I want to go back for the crayfish roll. Yum!
Whether you’re a fan of traditional seafood or looking to try something a little different, Underdocks offers a fantastic meal to fuel up for the rest of your day. Grab extra napkins, though, it can get messy!

Activities To Choose From For The Afternoon And Evening
For your last afternoon in Hamburg, there are plenty of options depending on your interests and the pace you’d like to set for the day. Whether you’re looking to relax, explore more of the city’s fascinating history, catch a show or play a fun round of mini golf, there’s something for everyone.
With just a weekend in Hamburg, you might not be able to do it all, but these options will give you a variety of activities to choose from to make the most of your 48 hours in the city.
Go Mini Golfing At Schwarzlichtviertel
One fun and unique activity for your weekend in Hamburg is to visit Schwarzlichtviertel for a round of glow-in-the-dark mini golf. With creative, colorful holes and fun obstacles, this is a mini golf experience like no other.
Our kids absolutely loved it and even kept mentioning that it was one of the best courses they’d played, and we’ve definitely played our fair share of rounds! It’s a great choice for a family activity that’s both fun and a little bit different.
See A Show At FABRIK
Another great option is to catch a live show at FABRIK, a popular music venue in Hamburg. We had a last-minute opportunity to add this to our itinerary when we saw that Livingston was playing, so we quickly booked tickets.
The venue has a fantastic vibe, and we had a blast enjoying the music. If you’re into live performances, it’s definitely worth checking out what’s on during your visit.
Water Sports On Alster Lake
If you’re visiting during the warmer months, spending time on Alster Lake is a must-do. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy some outdoor activities with the family.
You can rent a boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) to explore the beautiful waters. There are plenty of rental spots along the lake, like SUP-Dudes, where you can easily pick up a SUP or Kayakomat where you can rent a kayak, and enjoy a fun time on the water.
Whether you’re looking to paddle around or just chill by the shore, Alster Lake is a great option for a laid-back afternoon in Hamburg.
Discover Miniatur Wunderland
Another great option for your weekend in Hamburg is Miniatur Wunderland, the world’s largest model railway exhibition. This is a highly-rated activity and is perfect for families, especially if your kids love trains and miniature cities.
While we didn’t go ourselves (it wasn’t something we were interested in at the time), I spoke with some friends who visited and they absolutely loved it. The attention to detail and the sheer size of the exhibits blew them away.
From intricately designed landscapes to moving trains, it’s an experience that’s sure to impress, and it’s a top choice for many families visiting Hamburg.
Walk The Old Elbe Tunnel
The Old Elbe Tunnel is another unique activity to consider during your 48 hours in Hamburg. Built in 1911, this historic tunnel runs under the Elbe River and is 426 meters long (a little over a quarter of a mile).
It was originally constructed to connect the port of Hamburg with the southern districts, allowing workers and vehicles to cross the river without waiting for ferries.
Today, it still serves as a functional pedestrian and vehicle tunnel where you can walk or bike through the tunnel, which is a fun and unusual way to get across the Elbe.
On the other side, you’ll find the district of Steinwerder, with its lovely views of the city and the harbor.
Dinner At Holy Taco
For dinner in Hamburg, we highly recommend Holy Taco. If you’re craving delicious tacos and tasty margaritas, this is the place to go. The vibe is excellent, with a friendly and welcoming staff that adds to the overall experience.
Our personal favorites? The Langostinos Endiablados taco, packed with perfectly cooked shrimp and spicy goodness, was definitely a winner for me. Mike loved the El Pastor and Taco Chicharron—both bursting with flavor. Whether you’re a taco connoisseur or just looking for a fun and tasty meal, Holy Taco is a great spot to wrap up your weekend in Hamburg!
