8 Interesting Things To Do In Corniglia: Cinque Terre’s Quietest Gem

Perched dramatically on a clifftop overlooking the Ligurian Sea in the Italian Riviera, Corniglia offers a mostly peaceful escape from the crowds. While there are plenty of things to do in Corniglia, this charming village rewards visitors who come seeking tranquility.

If you’ve read any of my other blog posts, you’ll know that I’m drawn to destinations that aren’t always the most popular. There’s an experience I can’t quite put into words that I crave. I feel like an explorer that’s trying to find those amazing places that aren’t quite discovered yet. I want peace and quiet. I don’t want to share my experience with hundreds of others.

While Corniglia is one of the 5 villages in Cinque Terre it is not the most popular. During my trip in August, I wanted to find out why. Was it really because you have to climb 382 steep stairs to get to the village? There are stairs everywhere in Cinque Terre. That couldn’t be why.

But for some reason, this natural barrier filters out casual visitors. It leaves behind those who genuinely want to experience the village. That’s very attractive to me.

Corniglia doesn’t demand much of your time to explore its narrow streets and scenic viewpoints, but it quietly insists that you slow down. It’s about settling into the gentle pace of Italian village life. It’s about letting the magic of this clifftop sanctuary wash over you.

In this full guide to Corniglia, I’ll share the eight most rewarding experiences that capture the true spirit of this remarkable village. You’ll discover viewpoints, local flavors, refreshing hikes and cultural discoveries.

Is Corniglia Worth Visiting?

Yes! Corniglia is absolutely worth the visit, despite the Corniglia stairs that deter many travelers.

While other Cinque Terre towns bustle with day-trippers snapping photos, Corniglia invites you to linger, grab a glass of wine, eat a snack.

Here you’ll find locals chatting in doorways, cats sunbathing on ancient stone steps, and panoramic views that feel like your own private discovery.

In one street of the village, it can feel a bit crowded because the streets are so narrow and the town is quite small. Take a turn and you will be amazingly all by yourself!

Also, the very stairs that keep the crowds away only took me 10 minutes to climb. You can do this! And if you can’t, there’s a shuttle.

Perched high on the cliffs, this peaceful village provides an authentic base with stunning sea views. Like all my hotel recommendations, I search for nice places to stay for the best price. Getting To Corniglia

By Train

Arriving by train is the most convenient way to reach Corniglia. The train station sits at sea level, which means you’ll need to get up to the village perched high on the cliff.

You have two options: take the shuttle bus that runs between the train station and the village center, or climb the famous Corniglia stairs, officially called Scalinata Lardarina.

The staircase has 382 steps and offers beautiful views as you ascend, but it’s a bit of a workout. The shuttle bus is a great alternative if you’re carrying luggage or have mobility issues.

By Car

Driving to Corniglia gives you more flexibility, but parking is limited. Also you will want to explore the Cinque Terre area via train as none of the towns allow cars.

There’s one main parking lot near the village with about 60 parking spaces. Expect to pay around 20 euros per day, though there are discounts available for multiple days.

During peak season, this lot fills up quickly, so arrive early in the day.

Before booking accommodation, check if your hotel offers parking, as some properties provide this valuable amenity to their guests.

Best Things To Do In Corniglia

Now let’s discover what made me fall in love with Corniglia and makes it so special. This list of things to do in Corniglia showcases the village’s unique charm and atmosphere that you simply can’t find in the busier coastal towns.

1. Wander The Cute, Narrow Streets

One of the most delightful aspects of exploring Corniglia Cinque Terre is simply getting lost in its maze of narrow streets.

Via Fieschi serves as the main street through Corniglia, winding its way through the heart of the village.

Don’t be surprised if it feels a bit crowded at times, as you can see from the middle photo. It is such a small village with very narrow streets that even a handful of visitors can make this pathway feel bustling. It is really the only street that felt crowded when I visited though.

Every corner reveals charming details: weathered stone walls, colorful shutters, and glimpses of the sea between buildings. Take your time wandering without a specific destination in mind. If you do have a fear of missing out, here’s a list of places not to miss.

Must-see spots in Corniglia:

  • Piazza Largo Taragio – The heart of the village with a cute church and small cafés.
  • Chiesa di San Pietro – A beautiful 14th-century church with Gothic-Ligurian architecture.
  • Santa Maria Belvedere – A peaceful viewpoint overlooking the sea, perfect for soaking in the scenery.
  • Oratorio dei Disciplinati di Santa Caterina – A modest 18th-century oratory with an 18th-century frescoed ceiling depicting the torture of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

2. Check Out The Stunning Viewpoints

Taking in the spectacular views are undoubtedly among the top things to do in Corniglia. Perched high on its clifftop, this village offers some of the most breathtaking panoramas in all of Cinque Terre.

Unlike the other coastal towns, Corniglia’s elevated position provides sweeping vistas that stretch across the Ligurian Sea and the rugged coastline without hiking.

The Santa Maria Belvedere Terrace is the easiest viewpoint in Corniglia. It’s right in town. This peaceful spot offers unobstructed views of the sea and neighboring villages. Check it out at sunset or simply take a moment to appreciate the dramatic landscape.

For those seeking more adventurous views, you could also hike to Volastra for views that are even higher up. We’ll explore this hiking option in more detail later in this guide.

3. Hike The Blue Trail To Vernazza

One of the most rewarding activities in Corniglia is hiking the famous Blue Trail to the neighboring village of Vernazza. This coastal path offers pretty views and connects you directly to another of Cinque Terre’s picturesque towns.

The trail takes you along dramatic cliffs with breathtaking ocean vistas. However, the trail frequently closes due to landslides and maintenance, especially after heavy rains or during the winter months. Trail conditions can change quickly, so it’s essential to verify the current status.

Pro Tip: Always check for the most up-to-date information on trail closures and conditions on the official Cinque Terre National Park website before planning any hike.

Important note: The coastal Blue Trail between Corniglia and Manarola is currently closed, but you can still hike to Manarola through the inland route via Volastra. This alternative path takes you through beautiful vineyards and gives you a different perspective of the landscape.

4. Go Swimming

swimming area in Corniglia - fun thing to do in Corniglia

Yes, you can go swimming in Corniglia! While this clifftop village might not seem like an obvious swimming destination, there is actually a cuople of great spots to take a dip in the crystal-clear Ligurian Sea waters.

If you look at Google Maps, you’ll see Spiaggione di Corniglia marked as a beach. Don’t go there! Instead, follow the signs to Marina di Corniglia.

At the bottom of the stairs, you’ll find a rocky area that’s perfect for swimming. The rocky coastline creates natural pools and platforms for jumping into the deep, clear water.

While it’s not the best area for little kids due to the rocky terrain, adults, older kids and teens will absolutely love this swimming spot.

For a more adventurous beach experience, Guvano Beach is another option nearby that you can access by kayak or boat.

Fair warning: Guvano is a nudist beach, so only visit if you’re comfortable with that atmosphere!

5. Enjoy A Cocktail With A View

When it comes to finding a Corniglia restaurant with spectacular views, you’re in for a treat. The village offers some incredible dining spots where you can sip cocktails or enjoy a meal while taking in the breathtaking Mediterranean scenery.

Marina di Corniglia is an absolute must-visit. I had lunch there and enjoyed a very tasty pesto lasagna while soaking in the best view! Perched right on the coast, this spot offers panoramic vistas of the sea and coastline. If you’re staying in Corniglia, it would also be the perfect spot to watch the sunset with a drink in hand.

Bar Terza Terra is another excellent option for drinks with a view. I didn’t get to go here but according to reviews, you should definitely try their delicious bruschetta or focaccia to accompany your cocktails. The elevated position provides wonderful views over the village and sea too. It is an ideal spot for an afternoon aperitivo or evening drink.

Both locations combine the relaxed atmosphere that Corniglia is known for with stunning scenery that will make your dining experience truly memorable.

6. Sample Local Wine

The terraced vineyards surrounding Corniglia produce some of the region’s most distinctive wines. Wine tasting an essential part of any visit to any of the Cinque Terre villages. The steep coastal slopes and unique microclimate create ideal conditions for growing local grape varieties that you can’t find anywhere else.

The area is particularly famous for its white wines, especially Cinque Terre DOC, a crisp and mineral-rich wine made from local grape varieties like Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino.

You’ll also find Sciacchetrà, a sweet dessert wine made from dried grapes that’s perfect for sipping while watching the sunset.

Terra Rossa is an excellent spot to sample these local wines while enjoying the authentic atmosphere of a traditional Ligurian wine bar. The knowledgeable staff can guide you through tastings and help you understand the unique characteristics of each wine.

Bar Pan e Vin is another fantastic choice for wine lovers. This tiny Corniglia restaurant has amazing food to accompany your wine tasting. Despite its small size, it packs big flavors and offers an intimate setting where you can truly appreciate both the local wines and traditional dishes that complement them.

7. Hike To Volastra Or Continue On To Manarola

Corniglia, Cinque Terre from high above

This scenic hike is truly one of the best things to do in Corniglia for those who love adventure and spectacular views.

While the coastal Blue Trail to Manarola remains closed due to a landslide, you can hike this beautiful inland trail to Volastra for the views or continue on to Manarola. This route is not as popular as other hiking trails in Cinque Terre, so you will be hiking without crowds of people.

Trail Overview To Manarola

  • Distance: Approximately 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Duration: Around 2.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Elevation Gain: About 335 meters (1,100 feet)
  • Trail Numbers: 506, 586, and 587

Trail Highlights: Starting in Corniglia, the trail initially descends before ascending through terraced vineyards and olive groves toward the hilltop village of Volastra. The path meanders through picturesque vineyards with stunning sea views as you make your way to this inland town.

From Volastra, you can choose to turn back to Corniglia or continue the descent to Manarola. The final section involves a steep descent with numerous steps leading down to the coastal village of Manarola.

Hiking Tips:

  • Footwear: Wear sturdy hiking shoes, as parts of the trail can be uneven and slippery.
  • Hydration: Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months.
  • Trail Status: Always check the current trail conditions before setting out, as closures can occur due to weather or maintenance.

For a detailed map and recent trail reviews, you can refer to this AllTrails page: Sentiero Azzurro: Corniglia – Manarola via Volastra. I found this map easier to understand since it shows the full route as one connected trail, whereas the Cinque Terre National Park website breaks it into three separate segments.

8. Explore A Vineyard

For a truly off the beaten path experience that ranks among the most memorable things to do in Corniglia, venture to the nearby village of Volastra to explore a working vineyard.

This authentic agricultural experience offers a fascinating glimpse into the centuries-old tradition of winemaking in the Cinque Terre region.

Cantina Capellini offers an incredible variety of vineyard experiences that go far beyond a typical wine tasting. You can choose from several different options depending on your interests and schedule:

  • Sunset tours while enjoying wine and Ligurian specialties with breathtaking views
  • Intimate tastings right in the vineyard among the terraced vines
  • Trek + tasting combinations that combine hiking with wine education
  • History lessons about traditional winemaking techniques passed down through generations
  • Picnic experiences in the vineyard with perfectly paired local wines
  • Treasure hunts designed specifically for kids, making it a family-friendly adventure

Each experience provides insight into the incredible effort required to cultivate grapes on these steep coastal terraces, while giving you the chance to taste wines that truly capture the essence of this unique landscape.

For more information about specific tours and to book your vineyard experience, visit Cantina Capellini’s website. This is an opportunity to connect with local wine culture in a way that most visitors to Cinque Terre never experience.

Final Thoughts On Visiting Corniglia

Corniglia is one of the least visited villages in Cinque Terre, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t special. I really loved visiting this tiny town perched on a hill. The beach was surprising, and it is so easy to grab a refreshing drink with a view.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the crowds in Cinque Terre, head to Corniglia. Hike towards Voltarra, swim where no one else is swimming, and have a relaxing meal at Marina di Corniglia. A perfect day!

I hope you enjoy your time with all the things to do in Corniglia and remember to slow down. Ciao!
