When it comes to things to do in Riomaggiore, you are in for a treat. This colorful, vibrant village is packed with charm, adventure, and unbelievable sunset views. There’s really quite a lot to do for such a small, little place.
I visited Riomaggiore with a friend in August 2024, and I have to say, it stole my heart. From the moment we arrived, I could feel how alive this village was.
The buildings were so vibrant, the streets so inviting, and the little hidden corners just begged to be explored. And the sunsets were some of the best I have seen in Italy. Simply magical.
Some visitors get a little intimidated by the many stairs scattered around Riomaggiore, but really, it isn’t too bad. There are ways around some of them.
Don’t let them scare you off.

Where Is Riomaggiore?
Riomaggiore is the southernmost village of Cinque Terre, located on Italy’s stunning Ligurian coast.
It’s the first town you’ll reach if you’re coming from La Spezia, and it often feels like the gateway to Cinque Terre.
How To Get To Riomaggiore
Getting to Riomaggiore takes a little bit of planning, but once you’re there, exploring Cinque Terre is a breeze. The easiest and most convenient way to travel between the villages is by train. Driving is not recommended.
By Air
The closest international airports are:
- Pisa International Airport (PSA) – Around 1.5 hours away
- Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) – Around 2.5 hours away
- Florence Peretola Airport (FLR) – Around 3 hours away
From any of these airports, you can easily hop on a train to La Spezia, which acts as the main entry point to Cinque Terre.
By Car (Not Ideal)
If you’re road-tripping through Italy, it’s best to leave your car in La Spezia or Levanto. The villages themselves are mostly car-free, and parking is both expensive and limited. From there, catch the local train. It’s faster, cheaper, and way less stressful.
There are a few places to stay in Cinque Terre that have parking, but they are few and far between. Of the ones I know about, none are in Riomaggiore. If you are traveling by car and can find a hotel with parking, that would work. You can keep your car parked there, and do most of your exploring by train or by foot.
By Bus
Some long-distance buses will drop you off in La Spezia.
When my friend Cheryl and I traveled from Siena, we had to take a bus because the trains were under construction.
It wasn’t exactly smooth. The bus was late, and it didn’t even stop at the train station. We had to figure out the local buses to get there, which was a bit of an adventure.
If you can, stick with the trains.
By Train (The Best Way)
Hands down, the train is the easiest way to reach Riomaggiore. From La Spezia Centrale, Riomaggiore is just one quick stop away.
If you’re coming from a major city, here’s what you can expect:
- Florence to La Spezia – About 2.5 hours
- Pisa to La Spezia – About 45 minutes
- Milan to La Spezia – About 3.5 hours
- Rome to La Spezia – About 3 to 4 hours
A Few Tips:
- Trains are often delayed in Cinque Terre. Give yourself extra time if you have a reservation or tour booked.
- If you buy your ticket at the station, don’t forget to validate it! Find the little green machines near the platforms and stamp your ticket.
- Consider buying a Cinque Terre Train Card. It covers unlimited train travel between the villages and saves you money, especially if you’re staying for multiple days or traveling with kids.

What Is Riomaggiore Known For?
Before we jump into what to see in Riomaggiore, let’s talk about why this village is so special.
Compared to the other villages, Riomaggiore feels a little more rugged and authentic to me, with colorful houses stacked dramatically up the hillside and a lively harbor that’s always buzzing with energy.
It is easily one of the most photogenic towns. Imagine colorful houses stacked up the hillside, tiny alleyways to explore, and sunsets that make you stop and stare.
It’s known for its laid-back vibe compared to some of the busier villages. The marina can get a bit busy, but you can always find another area to explore all by yourself.
You’ll find incredible viewpoints, cozy wine bars, delicious seafood, and easy access to the water.

Is Riomaggiore A Good Place To Stay?
Absolutely! (Although, I might be a little biased.)
We stayed in Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre during our trip and couldn’t have been happier with our choice.
Places to stay in Riomaggior are less expensive than some of the other villages, which is always nice. Being able to walk back to your room easily after sunset, or better yet, watch it from our patio, is priceless.
Since it quickly became my favorite village of the five, I wouldn’t have wanted to stay anywhere else.

If you’re wondering what to do in Riomaggiore, getting out on the water should be at the top of your list.
There are a few different options. You can rent your own boat, hop on a ferry, or take a dreamy sunset cruise.
Sunset Boat Ride
One of the best ways to experience Riomaggiore is from the water at sunset. There are several companies that offer small group Cinque Terre sunset tours.
We booked our tour with Get Away Boat Tour. Sadly, our trip to sea was canceled because of a thunderstorm. The company was incredibly friendly and even offered to rebook us for the next day, but sadly we were leaving. We were super bummed, but hey, you can’t control the weather.
Sunset tours take you along the coast, giving you a totally different perspective of the five towns at the prettiest time of day.
You’ll have a local guide, a small group (so it never feels crowded), and even the chance to jump into the sea if you’re feeling adventurous or hot!
Important to know: The sunset tour with Get Away Boat Tour is for ages 18 and older. If you’re traveling with kids, check out Cinque Terre dal Mare. They offer boat tours that cater to all age groups, making it a fun option for families too.
Pro Tip: Sunset boat tours are super popular, especially in peak season. Book your spot early so you don’t miss out!
Explore The Coastline By Renting A Kayak
If you’re looking for a fun and adventurous way to explore Riomaggiore’s coastline, renting a kayak is a fantastic option.
It’s inexpensive, easy to arrange, and gives you the chance to paddle into little coves and hidden spots you’d never see from land.
Cinque Terre Adventure Boat Tours makes it simple. When you rent a kayak through them, they provide everything you need for a great day on the water.
A watertight bag for your towels and personal belongings, masks with snorkels, and a life jacket are all included in your rental price.

Rent A Boat In Riomaggiore
Want to explore Cinque Terre on your own but don’t feel like paddling? Renting a boat in Riomaggiore could be the perfect option.
Platforms like Nautal and Click&Boat offer a variety of boats, from small motorboats to larger yachts, some with skippers and others you can captain yourself. Think of them as the Airbnb or Turo for boats, complete with reviews to help you choose.
While I haven’t personally used these services, they provide a convenient way to find a boat that fits your needs and budget.
Book A Group Or Private Boat Tour
Another option for a memorable experience out on the water in Riomaggiore is to book a group or private boat tour.
Local companies like Cinque Terre Adventure Boat Tours, Cinque Terre dal Mare, Get Away Boat Tour, and Hyena 5 Terre Boat Tour offer a range of scenic excursions perfect for travelers wanting to explore beyond the shoreline.

Take The Ferry For A Cheaper Option
Looking for a budget-friendly way to get out on the water? Taking the ferry is a great alternative to private or guided boat tours. It’s scenic, convenient, and a whole lot easier on the wallet.
The Cinque Terre ferry connects Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, Monterosso, and even extends to Portovenere and La Spezia (on select routes). The only village in Cinque Terre that is not connected by ferry is Corniglia, as it sits high up on the cliffs without sea access.
Why choose the ferry?
- You still get that amazing sea view of the villages, just without the higher price tag.
- It’s a fun way for families to hop between towns without dealing with crowded trains.
- Kids love being on the boat, and you’ll love not having to hike between each stop.

2. Hike The Via dell’Amore
If you’re wondering what to do in Riomaggiore besides exploring the town and getting on the water, lace up your sneakers and hit the Via dell’Amore.
This famous path connects Riomaggiore and Manarola, hugging the cliffs the entire way. It’s one of the most iconic and scenic walks in all of Cinque Terre.
The best part is that it’s flat and easy, making it accessible for just about everyone, even if you’re traveling with little ones or just want a leisurely stroll.
A few things to know before you go:
- It costs extra to walk the Via dell’Amore, even if you already have a Cinque Terre Train or Trekking Card.
- Check the Cinque Terre National Park website ahead of time. The trail isn’t always fully open and sometimes can only be walked in one direction.
- Tickets are around 10 euros per person and can sell out during busy times.
- The walk itself only takes about 20 minutes, but I recommend taking it slow. Stop. Soak it in. The sea views are absolutely unforgettable. Sadly you are only allowed to be on the Via Dell’Amore for a max of 30 minutes.
I walked the Via dell’Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola during my August trip, and loved every minute of it. I got super lucky as the trail had just reopened after being closed for a very long time.
It wasn’t crowded at all. In fact, I only saw a couple of people the whole time. The negative is the price, but I think it’s worth it.
I honestly could have stayed on that little stretch of trail all day if they let me. If you only do one hike while in Cinque Terre, make it this one.

3. Wander The Winding Streets
One of the best things to do in Riomaggiore is simply to wander. Like all of the Cinque Terre villages, getting lost among the winding, colorful streets is half the magic.
I felt like I was snapping hundreds of photos. Tiny alleyways, hidden staircases, pastel buildings stacked high. You never know what little treasure you’ll stumble upon.
I definitely recommend walking up to the old castle, Castello di Riomaggiore. It’s a bit of a climb, but the views over the village and the sea were well worth the effort for me.
Another one of my favorite discoveries was a new route into town. From the train station, instead of going into the main tunnel, follow the road straight. It will curve and go along the coast. It’s called Via Telemaco Signorini. It’s quieter, scenic, and gives you a completely different perspective of Riomaggiore before you dive into the lively streets.
My advice would be to take your time, wander without a map, and let the town surprise you.

4. Hit The Beach In Riomaggiore
If you’re wondering if you can swim in Riomaggiore, the answer is yes. While Riomaggiore, Italy isn’t famous for sandy beaches, it does have a pretty good-sized rocky beach.
What I like is that it’s completely free, and for Cinque Terre standards, a fairly large stretch of waterfront. It’s a nice place to cool off after wandering the steep streets.
The downside is that it gets packed. As you can see from the picture above, it’s not exactly a secret.
The beach is very rocky, so it’s best to bring swim shoes unless you want to do the awkward pebble dance trying to get in and out of the water.
How to get there: From the marina, follow the signs for the public beach. It’s just a short walk along the coastal path and easy to find. You’ll pass some stunning viewpoints on the way, so have your camera ready!

5. Eat Some Delicious Food In Riomaggiore
It’s Italy, so of course the food is going to be amazing! And Riomaggiore definitely delivers.
This region of Liguria is famous for fresh seafood, pesto, focaccia bread, and refreshing white wines. You’ll find plenty of places serving these local specialties.
For a quick and tasty bite, grab a seafood cone from one of the few grab-and-go seafood spots along Riomaggiore’s main street.
If seafood isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Try the arancini (deep-fried rice balls) instead. We grabbed some right after arriving and they were some of the best we’ve ever had. We got ours at Costeve Friggitoria. I highly recommend it. I grabbed a few snacks from here during our stay. The shrimp ones still have their tails. They were delicious, but more work and a bit messy!
If you’re looking for a cozy sit-down meal, head over to Osteria La Torpedine. It is tucked away from the crowds and offers delicious handmade pastas in a charming setting.
Pro Tip: Make a reservation if you want to snag one of the coveted outdoor tables set up along the stairs. It’s a great atmosphere!

- Trofie al Pesto – Twisted pasta with the region’s famous basil pesto
- Fritto Misto – A cone of mixed fried seafood, perfect for snacking
- Focaccia – Soft, salty bread often topped with olives or onions

6. Hike From Riomaggiore To Portovenere
One of the most unique things to do in Riomaggiore is to hike to Portovenere!
If you’re looking to escape the crowds and do something a little more off the beaten path it is an incredible option. Most hikers in Cinque Terre choose paths between the towns.
Unlike those trails that connect the five villages of Cinque Terre, this one goes in the opposite direction. It rewards you with peace, views, and a whole new corner of the coastline to explore.
The hike is around 12.7 km (8 miles) and takes about 6 hours to complete. It’s considered moderate in difficulty with a max elevation of 575 meters (1,890 ft.). It’s definitely not a casual stroll, but if you’re up for it, the experience is worth every step.
I didn’t have time to complete this hike during my last visit, and I still regret it. It’s at the top of my list for when I return.
Along the trail, you’ll walk through Mediterranean scrubland, pass by ancient terraced vineyards, and take in breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea. It’s much quieter than the popular Cinque Terre trails, so you’ll truly feel like you’ve escaped the tourist route.
Once you reach Portovenere, take some time to explore this charming seaside town. It’s technically not part of the five villages, but it’s just as stunning.
You will find colorful harbor views, historic churches, and a chance to cool off with a gelato by the sea. Don’t miss the Church of St. Peter, perched dramatically on a rocky promontory.
Pro Tip: This activity will take up much of your day, especially if you add in exploring Palmaria Island or the nearby Tino islands. If you want to make it a full adventure, plan on a slow, relaxing pace with plenty of time to soak it all in.
Suggested Day Plan For Hiking From Riomaggiore To Portovenere
If you’re planning to tackle this adventure, here’s a simple outline to help your day go smoothly:
- Morning: Start early, around 7:00–8:00 AM. Beat the heat and give yourself plenty of time to hike at a relaxed pace.
- Mid-Morning: Take breaks as needed. Enjoy the sweeping sea views, snap photos, and soak in the quieter side of the Cinque Terre coastline.
- Lunch: Pack a picnic to enjoy along the trail, or plan to grab something once you reach Portovenere. There are some tasty seaside cafés with fresh seafood and pasta options.
- Afternoon: Explore Portovenere! Wander through the colorful harbor, visit the Church of St. Peter (Chiesa di San Pietro), and take a stroll through the narrow streets filled with cute shops and gelato stands.
- Late Afternoon: If you have extra time and energy, hop on a ferry to Palmaria Island for a little extra adventure and a swim, or take a scenic boat ride to admire the coast from the water.
- Evening: Take the ferry or a bus to La Spezia, then catch a quick train ride back to Riomaggiore.
Hiking Tips
- If you don’t want to hike back, you can take the ferry to Cinque Terre or a bus from Portovenere to La Spezia, and then hop the train back to Riomaggiore.
- Wear proper shoes. This trail has uneven terrain and elevation changes.
- Bring plenty of water and snacks. There aren’t any services along the way.
- Always check trail conditions ahead of time; some sections can be closed for maintenance or weather.
7. Grab A Drink With A View
When it comes to the best views in Cinque Terre, you’re never far from something breathtaking. The colorful cliffside buildings, the sparkling sea, the dramatic hills. It’s all part of what makes this place so special.
I mean, what could be better than sipping an Aperol spritz or a crisp glass of white wine while soaking it all in?
One spot my friend and I found, and absolutely loved, is right by the train station in Riomaggiore. Bar e Vini a Pié de Ma is perched right on the edge of the cliff, with a big outdoor patio that faces the sea. It’s the perfect place to feel the sea breeze, relax after a day of exploring, and just be in the moment.

8. Watch The Sunset
Let’s talk about my favorite thing to do in Riomaggiore, watching the sunset.
Sunsets here just hit differently. There’s something about the colorful cliffs, the calm of the sea, and the way the whole village glows that makes it unforgettable.
If you’re chasing the best sunset view in Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore should be at the top of your list.
Make sure to set aside at least one evening during your Cinque Terre adventures to take it all in. You won’t regret it!
Here are some of the best places to catch the sunset in Riomaggiore:
- Down by the Marina: Grab a spot on the rocks near the water and watch the sun sink into the Ligurian Sea.
- Via dell’Amore Trail: Start your walk toward Manarola and stop at one of the overlooks for a stunning sunset view.
- Via Telemaco Signorini: This scenic road winds up above the town and offers incredible, wide-open views over the village and the sea.
- Your Hotel Terrace (if you’re lucky!): We watched the sunset a few times from our own patio, and it was absolutely perfect.
- Bar e Vini a Pié de Ma: Sip a glass of wine on their cliffside patio while you watch the colors change. Get there early!
- The Upper Viewpoints in Town: Wander up the winding streets to some of the higher viewpoints for a peaceful, panoramic sunset experience.
